Case Study – Veterinary Clinic

Under a comprehensive contract with the U.S. Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA), NIKA renovated an outdated veterinary treatment facility at Scott Air Force Base and annexed a new structure. The vet clinic, which is professionally staffed by Army Veterinary Corps personnel, provides complete veterinary care for all government-owned animals, military service animals, and some privately-owned animals. The previously existing vet clinic faced a variety of significant code compliance problems and was classified as a business occupancy facility rather than a medical facility. The renovation of the old building and construction of the new annex was intended to implement critical mechanical system upgrades and expand the functional capabilities of the facility.

The addition required a new foundation and related civil engineering work. Additionally, it required a standoff distance to comply with the UFC 4-010-01 DoD Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings. All new perimeter windows were also required to meet ATFP requirements. The structural engineering design complied with the latest applicable UFC 3-301-01 standards.

NIKA specified clinical grade finishes in order to maintain hygiene standards in both the renovated and new space, with the additional goal of creating a calm and soothing interior environment for the building’s users. The new program layout integrated the medical equipment and office furniture based on user requirements.

As part of this project, NIKA also provided USAMRMC Office of Facility Director (OFD) program support, providing recommendations to the OFD and others on matters affecting budget, facility assets, management, and facility programs.
