Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ)

NIKA designed the new LEED Silver, Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) at the Weapons Training Battalion on Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA. NIKA decommissioned the existing site (a rifle range) and redeveloped it to accommodate this new facility designed to house up to 300 people. The project included:

  • Soil testing for lead contamination
  • Conformance with unexploded ordinance base plan procedures
  • Design of storm water management systems
  • Design of 240 parking spaces and sidewalk systems
  • Connection to base infrastructure
  • Adherence to Antiterrorism and Force Protection criteria

The new three-story, facility includes 7,200 gross square meters (77,520 SF)of residential space, providing approximately 2,400 square meters (25,833 SF) per level. NIKA constructed the BEQ facility to accommodate 150 two-person rooms and the associated support spaces. NIKA designed the rooms in accordance with the “2+0” military configuration that requires access through a conditioned corridor. NIKA designed the building’s exterior in accordance with the existing 2000 Series barracks on base, as well as the Base Exterior Architecture Plan (BEAP).

The BEQ was designed in the Georgian style by incorporating a brick-faced structure with cast stone accents, a standing seam, metal, gabled roof, and a cast stone-simulated water table.

This BEQ incorporated a fully-designed sprinkler and mass notification system compliant with UFC and NFPA criteria.
